Some exes argue to resolve things. High-conflict exes argue to feel things — the surge of a reaction, the confirmation that they can still reach you. Once you see that difference, one truth follows: you cannot win the argument, but you can stop being worth arguing with.
That’s the Gray Rock method in one sentence: become as interesting as a gray rock on the side of the road.
What is the Gray Rock method?
Gray Rock is a self-protection technique that emerged from survivor communities (the term is credited to a 2012 essay by a writer under the name Skylar) for dealing with people who feed on emotional reaction. The idea: when interaction is unavoidable, you make yourself an emotionally unrewarding target — flat, brief, factual, boring. Not rude. Not silent-treatment. Just… beige.
In my risk-strategist terms: a high-conflict person runs a cost-benefit calculation like anyone else. Provoking you has been high-reward at zero cost for years. Gray Rock quietly zeroes out the reward. Boredom does what confrontation never could.
How to Gray Rock, practically
- Answer in facts, briefly. ‘Pickup is at six.’ ‘The form is signed and in her backpack.’ No elaboration, no tone.
- Share nothing personal. Your new job, your dating life, your weekend, your feelings — all of it is fuel. ‘Fine, thanks’ is a complete update.
- Go flat, not cold. A neutral, mildly pleasant monotone. Visible iciness is itself a reaction they can work with.
- Don’t correct their version of history. Every correction is an invitation to round two. Let false statements die in the air — and live in your log.
- Keep your real reactions for safe places. Gray Rock is a mask for them, not repression for you. Vent to your coach, your therapist, your one trusted person — never to the source.
Gray Rock and BIFF: the complete communication system
People ask me which one to use. The answer is both — they’re two halves of one strategy. BIFF governs your necessary written communication: structured, documentable, judge-ready. Gray Rock governs your presence — pickups, school events, unavoidable calls, and every message that deserves no reply at all. BIFF is what you say when you must speak; Gray Rock is who you are when you can’t leave.
